Starting sometime today, apparently, MLB.tv subscribers will be able to stream the games through Playstation 3 consoles. Assuming it works as well as the Boxee app — which is pretty amazing, actually — this is a huge step forward for Sony.

They advertise the PS3 as “doing everything,” but before coming forward with this, MLB.tv was available on Roku boxes and Boxee, but not the Playstation. If this works well — and it should definitely work better than MLB’s crummy flash player — it goes a long way to making the PS3 more of a home theater PC rather than just a video game system. If Sony is going to say that the Playstation 3 does everything, then I probably shouldn’t need to connect my computer to my TV. Ever.

For nerds like me who were considering dropping some change on a dedicated HTPC, this a great thing. It also helps market the PS3 to an entirely different market. Yes, I like video games, but I also use it to stream Netflix and watch Blu Rays.

And FYI: As of around 11, the app was listed in the Playstation Store, but not yet available for download.
